About Legend (1985)
Ridley Scott's Legend (1985) features Tim Curry's extraordinary performance as the Darknessāa towering, red-skinned demon lord whose elaborate prosthetic makeup by Rob Bottin took five and a half hours to apply daily and stands as one of the most impressive practical character designs in film history. The production suffered a catastrophic setback when the massive 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios, housing the film's elaborate forest sets, burned to the ground, forcing Scott to rebuild and reshoot significant portions. Tom Cruise, then just 22 years old and starring in his first fantasy film, performed many of his own stunts in the freezing underwater sequences. The film exists in two significantly different versionsāa European cut with Jerry Goldsmith's orchestral score and an American cut with a Tangerine Dream electronic soundtrackāand debate over which is superior has persisted for decades among the film's devoted cult following.
